The Most Shocking Celebrity Breakups

Now, thanks to social media, we get an even more intimate look inside their lives and their love stories. When they celebrate marriage milestones, anniversaries and special occasions we feel the love and celebrate it too. That’s what can at times make it so shocking to find out that our favorite couples are calling it quits. Sometimes we never saw it coming, which makes the news just a little bit harder to take.

Most recently, Black Hollywood screen king Blair Underwood and his wife, Desiree DaCosta, announced that they were ending their 27-year marriage. The couple released a joint statement via social media announcing their split. “After a tremendous amount of thought, prayer & work on ourselves individually & collectively, we have come to the conclusion to end our marriage that began 27 years ago,” the statement read. “It has truly been a beautiful journey. Our proudest achievements are our three incredible children. Three souls to which God entrusted us. We continue to be awed & humbled by the blessings of parenting. We have always put their best interests first & will continue to do so. We will continue to be the best of friends and co-parents and have the utmost respect for one another as we embark upon this new chapter of our lives, separately.”

01Blair Underwood and Desiree DaCostaOver the weekend, actor Blair Underwood and his wife, Desiree Dacosta, announced that they were ending their 27-year marriage. They share a daughter, Maven Sonae Morgan, 7. 04Solange Knowles and Alan FergusonAfter months of speculation, Solange revealed that she and director Alan Ferguson were ending their marriage of five years. “Early this year we separated and parted ways,” the singer wrote via Instagram in November 2019. “(and tho it ain’t nan nobody business) I find it necessary to protect the sacredness of my personal truth and to live in it fully just as I have before and will continue to do.” 05Kenya Moore and Marc DalyKenya Moore and Marc Daly announced their split in September 2019 after two years of marriage. “My sole concern and focus is and will always be my daughter, Brooklyn, my miracle baby,” Kenya wrote in a statement. “She was made in love and true commitment. The following month, the RHOA star confessed that she remained hopeful that reconciliation was possible between them with stronger communication. 06Niecy Nash and Jay TuckerNiecy Nash broke the news that she and husband Jay Tucker decided to part ways. The ‘Claws’ actress announced the split of her husband via Instagram, saying the two reached a mutual decision. “We believe in the beauty of truth,” she says. “Always have. Our truth is that in this season of our lives, we are better friends than partners in marriage.” Nash has since remarried, announcing a surprise wedding to singer Jessica Betts in August 2019. 07Anthony Mackie and Sheletta ChapitalIn November 2019, it was announced that actor Anthony Mackie quietly filed for divorce from his wife, Sheletta Chapital in late 2017 and finalized the following year. TMZ reported that the pair will share joint custody of their children, however, nothing is known about the cause of the split. 08Monica and Shannon BrownIn October 2019, Monica and Shannon Brown finalized their divorce. In a conversation with ESSENCE’s Yes Girl! podcast, the singer revealed that she and her ex-husband still share a mutual level of respect – especially as it relates to co-parenting. “We don’t have to be together to respect one another,” she told ESSENCE exclusively. “Anything I can do to really assist in making sure [parenting] continues to be everything that it’s always been, that’s what I’m going to do.” 09Wendy Williams and Kevin HunterIn April 2019, Wendy Williams and her husband/longtime manager Kevin Hunter announced their impending divorce. The split followed rumors that Hunter had welcomed a baby with his longtime mistress. During an interview with Sway In The Morning, Williams wished her estranged husband well, saying, “I still love him and I wish him the best in his new life with his new family.” Still, she was intent on moving the divorce along. “I want a divorce, like, yesterday. I want a divorce, like, two months ago, three months ago, whenever I found out, four months ago… I want a divorce and I want to be friends with Kevin.” 10Diddy and CassieIn October 2018, it was announced that Diddy and Cassie went their separate ways after going strong for over a decade. According to his reps, Diddy broke things off with Cassie a few months before the news went public. Reps for both parties said at the time that, “the decision was amicable and they remain friends.” 11La La and Carmelo Anthony

The love and basketball between La La and Carmelo Anthony ended when the pair split in April 2017. They reunited in late 2018 and have been co-parenting their son, Kiyan, while living apart, reports PEOPLE. The couple got married in 2010 and have a 13-year-old son Kiyan who they welcomed in March of 2007.

Soon after celebrating 5 years of marriage and welcoming their son Eissa in January of 2017, singer Janet Jackson and her billionaire husband Wissam called it quits. The couple began dating in 2010 and wed in a secret ceremony in 2012 before pubically celebrating their union in 2013. They officially announced their split in April 2017.

In 2016, reality TV couple and Instagram darlings Omarion and Apryl Jones announced their split, shocking fans all over social media. Omarion tweeted about the breakup and Apryl offered an explanation to fans via Snapchat.

In 2015, singer Kelly Price announced that she and her husband/manager, Jeffrey Rolle, were calling it quits after 23 years of marriage. “After the untimely death of my sister last year, it weighed on me heavily that this was something we needed to do,” said Price in a statement. “I ultimately made the decision to live the best life I can. The Neely’s are calling it quits after 20 years of marriage. The Down Home with the Neelys hosts released a joint statement saying a divorce was “the best decision” for them. “Moving forward our focus will be on our individual brands and we are optimistic about our respective futures,” they said.

The high-profile couple announced their separation in a joint statement in 2012. “We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much,” they said.

Back in April 2009 singer Kelis filed for divorce from rapper Nas despite being seven months pregnant with their first child. The couple officially divorced in May 2010.
