Big hotel chains are predictable. And, for some people, predictability is a good thing. But then there are travelers who want to be surprised. There are sojourners who want to feel the unique sensibility and spirit of a person or family in their accommodations. For those travelers, bed and breakfasts are the perfect places to stay on the road. Often small and always welcoming, bed and breakfasts are typically places where you can easily meet other guests, not to mention the inn’s owner, and share stories and travel tips over a delicious homemade meal. With summer here, there are some particular bed and breakfasts that are worth checking out in the warm months. Here are Black-owned bed and breakfasts that will tickle your fancy this summer.
Akwaaba Philadelphia
Philadelphia, PA
This property is part of a group of Black-owned bed and breakfasts. In fact, we covered another Akwaaba property in our list of cozy B&Bs for a winter getaway. This one, situated in the University Section of Philadelphia, features all of the historic charm its owner Monique Greenwood is known for infusing into each of her properties. The 1880s manor has been converted in an inn with bright and warm suites and guestrooms. In developing the property, Greenwood made sure to keep much of the original stained glass, marble fireplaces and woodwork, while adding some modern luxuries like flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi. In the summer, the gorgeous and expansive porch is the perfect place to enjoy some iced tea and the nearby University City comes alive with outdoor events during the hot months.
Six Acres Bed And Breakfast
Cincinnati, OH
Six Acres Bed And Breakfast is both a charming B&B and an important historical landmark. The building first went up in the 1800s and was owned by an abolitionist who provided shelter for those traveling the Underground Railroad from nearby Kentucky to the free state of Ohio. It was featured in our list of cozy accommodations for a fall getaway but this warm and welcoming five-room inn deserves a second look for a summer vacation. The pristine six acres it sits upon are perfect for picnicking and enjoying outdoor activities during warm days. And just about a 15-minute drive from downtown Cincinnati, the inn provides guests easy access to all of the summer fun to be had there, like the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden or the buzzing Findlay Market, offering local food and art.
Morehead Manor
Durham, NC
Owned by couple Monica and Daniel Edwards, this picturesque inn sits in Durham, North Carolina in the Raleigh-Durham area, and has been operating since 1997. It’s an 8,000-square-foot house with perfectly decorated rooms featuring romantic touches such as canopies, chandeliers, love seats and classic vanity tables. All guests are given plush microfiber robes to relax in and enjoy lavish homemade breakfasts daily. Throughout the home and in its garden you’ll find peaceful corners to sit and read or enjoy a refreshing beverage.
Urban Cowboy
Nashville, TN
If you want to enjoy the vibrant live music scene of Nashville but escape to quiet accommodations between shows, visit the Urban Cowboy. Each room is elaborately decked out in funky southwestern décor and pieces like clawfoot tubs and rustic wood platform beds. The Victorian-style manor house contains eight suites and an on-site restaurant and bar called the Stable House where guests can enjoy pizza and craft cocktails. This 21+ up spot has become a favorite amongst artists and adventure seekers passing through Nashville.
Pleasanton Courtyard
Fayetteville, GA
Pleasanton Courtyard is an easy 30-minute drive outside of Atlanta. However, it feels like a million miles away thanks to its lush green settings and quiet grounds. The luxurious rooms feature upscale décor like four-poster beds, French shutter doors and floor-to-ceiling windows. There are just five rooms in this B&B, so every visitor gets special attention from the staff. Each morning, guests indulge in a hot two-course breakfast in the formal sit-down dining room. Alternatively, those wanting something more causal can dine around the swimming pool – which is, of course, also a great place to cool off on hot summer days.
